Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan

If you are moving to Alberta from outside Canada, apply for AHCIP within three months of becoming a resident. Do that and coverage can start from the day you established residency.

What we could verify

The three-month clock is about when you submit the application, not a three-month wait for people arriving from abroad. That distinction is easy to miss. Come from outside Canada, apply quickly, and Alberta's page says coverage can be backdated to the day you became a resident. Wait too long and the start date slips to whenever they process you.

Bring proof of Alberta residency (a lease, utility bill, or insurance are examples), proof of identity (a passport or both sides of a PR card), and proof you can legally be in Canada (a PR card, Canadian passport, or a Canada entry document such as a work or study permit). If you were not stamped in, Alberta says a CBSA Travel History Report may be accepted. Show the card and photo ID when you get care. Some children of parents who are not themselves eligible use a different form. Tour the how-to-apply page for that case rather than guessing.

Who it is for

Eligible Alberta residents. Immigration documents that can support an application include a visitor record, work permit, study permit, or permanent resident card or document. Eligibility still has to be confirmed. A short visit does not make you a resident.

How to act on it

Complete the AHCIP application, take original documents to a registry agent within three months of arriving from outside Canada, and make sure the mailing address is current so the card reaches you.

Taxes and benefits for newcomers

The CRA treats you as a newcomer in the first year you are a resident for income tax. For most people that starts the day you begin living in Canada. Benefits can start before your first tax return.

OHIP and the Ontario health card

Ontario has no waiting period for OHIP if you qualify. You apply in person at ServiceOntario. Coverage is for medically necessary doctor and hospital care, not for every prescription or dental visit.
