Apply as soon as you are living in British Columbia. The enrolment page says you must apply in order to use health-care services, and it points to a separate explanation of what coverage you need while an application is processed. We are not stating a waiting-period length here, because the page we checked tells you to read the eligibility and 'how to apply' pages for that timing rather than printing a number of months in the summary.
The page was marked last updated June 15, 2026. Ignore any third-party blog that quotes a wait, a premium, or a student rule without sending you to gov.bc.ca. Premium policy has changed over the years. The sentence we verified is that there is no cost to apply.
B.C. residents who meet MSP eligibility. The detailed test, including which study and work permits qualify, is on the province's eligibility page linked from this one. Dependants are part of mandatory enrolment.
Complete the BC Application for Health and Drug Coverage from the official site. If you need the account confirmed later, there is a separate online request for an MSP account confirmation letter.
If you are moving to Alberta from outside Canada, apply for AHCIP within three months of becoming a resident. Do that and coverage can start from the day you established residency.

Ontario has no waiting period for OHIP if you qualify. You apply in person at ServiceOntario. Coverage is for medically necessary doctor and hospital care, not for every prescription or dental visit.
