Rogers says chatr has no credit checks, no term contracts, and no commitment.
Plans are prepaid, with nationwide 4G coverage as Rogers describes it.
A useful first month if a postpaid carrier wants a credit file or a deposit you do not want to pay.
No plan price was stated in the newcomer paragraph we checked. Prepaid prices change often.
Newcomers get stuck when a postpaid plan triggers a credit check and the file is empty. Prepaid avoids that. chatr is the option Rogers itself points to on the newcomer page for that situation. You pay ahead, and you do not sign a two-year term.
The tradeoff is usually a smaller data allotment and 4G rather than 5G. We are not guessing the current gigabytes or the monthly amount. Open chatr's plan page the week you buy the SIM. Rogers also notes that a phone has to support the network bands it lists, or you will need a phone from the store.
Who it is for
Prepaid is aimed at anyone who wants service without a contract. Bring government ID to buy a SIM. Rogers' newcomer ID list is the practical set: passport and permit, PR card, or confirmation of permanent residence.
How to act on it
Buy a chatr SIM at a chatr or Rogers retailer, or start from the plan page. Load only what you need for the first month until you know your data use.
Bell's current bring-your-own-phone page lists in-market prices, including a 100 GB plan shown at $60 a month and an unlimited plan with U.S. and Mexico shown at $75. These are not labelled as newcomer discounts.
Koodo's newcomer page is the flanker brand's version of the TELUS Canoo partnership. It promises deals for newcomers and does not list a plan price on the page we checked.
Bell no longer opens new prepaid accounts. Its prepaid page sends new customers to Lucky Mobile and says those plans have no long-term commitment, no credit check, and no data overages.
